OXFORD'S 'TRENDIEST STREET' IS READY FOR A BANK HOLIDAY PARTY

SHOPKEEPERS, eateries and residents are joining forces this Bank Holiday weekend to host a special community festival in Oxford’s trendiest shopping street.

To celebrate the diverse range of businesses traders are hosting Mayfest, a community festival on Bank Holiday Monday, running from 1pm to 10pm.

There will be street stalls, a food and drink market, live music and children’s activities for the free celebration.

All the shops are putting on events and special offers, including The Oxford Wine Café, the Jericho Cheese Shop, G&Ds ice cream parlour, Pierre Victoire, Al-Andalus, Carluccio’s, Angels cocktail bar, Love Jericho bar and lounge, Gail’s, the Duke of Cambridge and Common Ground. Neighbouring Somerville College is supporting the event.

Roxy Syeda, of Angels, and Loredana Stroup, of G&D’s ice cream shop, are helping to organise the street fair. Ms Syeda said: “The street will look fabulous with restored festoon lights and hanging flower baskets. There will be much to see and do. We hope lots of people will come along.”

John Mair, the chairman of a new committee established to boost the fortunes of the street, came up with the idea for Mayfest. He said “The weather forecast is fine and we’re all set for a brilliant day. Please support this local event. We hope it will be the first of many.”

The ‘revival’ committee for the street, which runs between Walton Street and Woodstock Road, is already proving a success and has raised more than £3,000 to restore the overhead lights in the street and put up new hanging baskets.

Committee members include councillors, representatives of Somerville and University colleges and the majority of traders.

Businesses previously held a street fair in 2016. Uense, a new men’s designer clothes shop, will soon be opening.
